Ipad headphone out to guitar amp

Hello,
I have the irig hd into ipad with 1/8stereo out that splits into 1/4 red and gray. So the signal on the gray side seems to get all or most of the reverb the red side gets it too but not the same. IK Multimedia says to use the red side. Can i plug the gray side into a second channel on the amp or gray side to another amp.

I have a vox ac30 with 6 inputs and a fender bassbreaker 45w head with the normal and bright channels plus a combined channel.

Thanks

I'm not entirely sure how the irig hd works. I have a irig hd 2 which has a proper 1/4" mono out for an amp but I think you'd be best served asking this question on the irig forums http://cgi.ikmultimedia.com/ikforum/viewforum.php?f=18&sid=b78467d3bca044bfb49ecddbcb305182

Or if doesn't help ask on audiobus forum (this is a very active forum about all things ios music related)

  • Yeah, I think the iRig people could answer your question better. I'm not sure what the red/gray sides are?
  • Here is the cable i use going out of headphone jack on ipad to my ipad.
Hosa Stereo Y-Cable Mini Male - 2 1/4" Mono Males 10 ft. The red is ring the grey is tip. Ik recommends using the red side into guitar amp.It sounds fine but I accidentally
used the grey jack and notice a lot higher effect levels like reverb. I'll check the forums.

    Thanks
  • Hi, I just posted this discussion which may be of use to you:

Using Tonestack with real guitar amplifier
  • I would highly suggest you ditch the iRig gear and get an Apogee Jam or something similar. It's a dedicated 1/4 input with a small preamp with gain control and an output that goes to your lightning port. Then you use the headphone jack on your iPad/iPhone as your output.
  • Ok I turned mono on in iPad settings accessibility. I like it the guitar note sounds full or more dense.

    Thanks bpd
  • There's some weird stuff going on for sure with the iRig 2. Because of the proximity of both the input and the output on the ipad headphone jack, some craziness and unpleasantness can happen. Yonac did an excellent job creating more isolation and reduced feedback risk by doing whatever they did at the expense of making the output mono (the optional anti-feedback switch in settings. I think I'm going to switch to the lightning based style of inputs as I move forward.

But all this doesn't quite explain what you are hearing, it sounds like you might be mixing up some mono and stereo fx (which to be fair, aren't quite so clearly marked to me, I was hoping on making a chart once I had a lightning based connector and could do stereo out more sensibly). Lots of times things like this come down to phase....they tell you to use the ring because that's the left out (I think) and what most coders would default to, so chances are "the good stuff" is going to be more likely to be more on that output, but I'd love to see a preset you are using that has this problem and rule out the software first.

Irig hd2 is amazing. Or any usb interface. You really want to use the lightning port. Hesdphone jack is terrible for guitar input
  • Is the HD2's 1/4" out stereo? I was looking at the Line 6 Sonicport and it had both output signals on a 1/4" TRS jack...no fiddly gain knobs either (which could be a good or bad thing I guess)

As far as I know, you can use iPad headphones with guitar if you have necessary adapter. But I can advice you not to use them because they sit in the ear unreliably and they can fall out at any wrong moment, for example when you are playing europa's song casino. It is really fast and emotional to keep your headphones :)
  • Hi.. I go iPad straight into a PA because I'm done hauling amps around. But it took me a while to get used to the lack of that amp sitting next to me. And then there's tubes (which make a huge difference even if just in the power amp section). I love the sound of 'em but I've made the choice of convenience and am quite happy.
